Some of the solutions currently on the market enable very precise playlist management allowing for content updates in very fine timing increments. Other systems may use a more automated approach built on complex algorithms to define playlists automatically.
Each approach has it's pros and cons but I, for one, like having the ability to fine tune a playlist myself rather than have the software do it on "auto-pilot".
On the other hand, you may not care if media clips play at a (precise) predetermined time and place. For those projects you may want to recommend a solution that won't require manual playlist creation or other user intervention. These automated solutions may start making sense in very large (1000 +) screen deployments but you may be sacrificing some precision for the sake of efficiency.
The important thing here is to ensure you can manage the content in a way that makes sense to the viewer.Ads for breakfeast sandwhiches may not be appropriate for playback mid-afternoon. Automation just for the sake of saving an bit of work may not be worth the headaches if it fails to meet the client's requirements.
Remember it's important to match the solution to the needs of the client.
